I assume that in the right image the white areas show how much the field is expanding, and the purple areas show how much the field is shrinking, am I right about this?

^I believe the white areas equate higher values, and since the vectors are like you said expanding, this would mean there is higher divergence. Likewise with the purple areas, there's lower values for lower divergence.
