How can we determine what looks good versus bad? Is there an objective way to do it?

I wonder if there is a useful concept of matrix "power". It might work for rotations, since rotations are composable (R0, R1 in SO(n) => R1 @ R0 in SO(n)). You would need to parametrize the rotation, then linearly vary the parameters.
