Technically it would not be wrong to think of them as complex numbers, if they are interchangeable, what makes one better than the other? Is it just to represent geometric meaning?

Think about adding j and k as the other axes, it would be more confusing to also think about them as being complex numbers too.

We should just consider i as the y-axis.

This isn't complete nonsense, sqrt(-1) is just asking what's "half" of the action needed to go from 1 to -1, and i, or rotating by 90 degrees in the complex plane, is half of the action.

why was this nonsense again?
Do we consider i as an axis?
