I found a nice article that explains why the CIE color space has this weird shape: https://medium.com/hipster-color-science/a-beginners-guide-to-colorimetry-401f1830b65a

It's also interesting how this shows that 3 primaries will never be enough to show the complete CIE 1931 color space unless some primaries are outside this space.

Is the y axis here supposed to be z axis? And what will happen if we have combination of light out of this color region?
