How to ray tracing keep track of Scattering? I feel different texture has different way of scattering. Over time the property also changes.

Is the reason why we can't see this phenomenon with naive path tracing that we are scattering in random directions? When I think about it from the light source perspective it makes perfect sense that the light rays get focused.
