Is there any reason why the glass on the lanterns in the image are completely dark until four-bounce illumination?

I am also curious as to why the lantern is only illuminated on the 4th bounce. Is it because previous pictures did not have enough light reaching the lantern, or is it only til the 4th bounce that rays are actually able to hit the lantern?
