The way that I think of it is as follows. You have two planes (let's call them $A$ and $B$), one of which is emitting or reflecting light ($A$). For a point $p$ on $A$, the light field tells you what points on $B$ receive light from $A$ at $p$, and in what quantity. In other words, if you're at a point $x$ on $B$, the light field will tell you where the light is coming from on $A$ that is is hitting $x$. Am I on the right track?

I think the light field is a concept corresponding to a space. If I have a space, then the light field is a set, which contains all the light rays passing through the space.
