Is it just me or do the shadows on the yellow thing look okay in the top picture? If it also used a shadow map with low resolution, why would we not see aliasing on the shadows on the yellow thing too?

I think that the aliasing is a function of how far the shadow is away from the occluding object. The objects on the wall are aliased because the texels in the shadow map are being projected onto a larger area than the self shadowing shadows that are directly on the yellow object.
