Is there a reason as to why we consider a rectangular grid of pixels here rather than a square grid. I would imagine that a square grid of pixels would be more uniform in deciding what information to keep for each pixel

@kapalani. Interesting question (and one I don't immediately have the answer to). Note that 4:2:0 format is symmetric, as chroma is downsampled the same amount in both directions. However, 4:1:0 would not be symmetric, as we'd downsample chroma by 4X in the horizontal direction and 2x in the vertical. (4:2:2 is also not symmetric.)
