I don't understand exactly what this slide is trying to communicate. Could someone help illuminate?

This slide explained how the bidirectional path tracing works and what it looks like with different path length.

Each row in the tower represents one certain path length.(increasing from top to bottom)

And each picture in one row represents whether it leans more to the forward path tracing(shoting ray from eye) or to the backward path tracing(shoting ray from light source). // And I guess left ones lean to backword path tracing and vice versa.
