Besides subsurface scattering, are there other scenarios in which the rendering equation as is right now would not do a very good job?

In diffuse and specular, when ray hit the surface and scatter to many directions, is it because it go into the surface and get out again like this subsurface? That is to say, in physical phenomena, are subsurface and diffuse the same thing? (the ray doesn't reflect on surface immediately )
