Do most people in this field specialize in one type of object (for example, liquids, or plants, or people)? Or do most professionals generally knows how to do a lot of different type of objects?

In general, I wonder what the work pipeline is to create 3D graphics models for things such as games. Do the developers and designers work hand-in-hand to develop code necessary to model the things they want to model? Or do software developers focus on making general software robust yet user-friendly enough to provide designers with all the tools necessary to make the models they want to make?
