Another commonly used method is orthographic projection, which belongs to the parallel projection family. I picture it as drawing lines from objects' vertices orthogonal to the view plane, then reconstructing the "side view". This method preserves the size of the object, but can miss the whole picture if the object is too large or too close. (I think)
