Does catmull clark work in meshes with more than 4 points (5 sides, 6 sides, etc)?

I noticed in Maya there were multiple types of Catmull Clark subdiv types we could choose from but most of the applications have now defaulted to: http://graphics.pixar.com/opensubdiv/docs/intro.html

I think this one works for all polygons - eventually it split every polygon into quads
