when using a 3d software like SketchUp we see this a lot. but we can make things look better by switching on 'anti-aliasing'. I'm curious about how that works

I rendered a checkerboard with V-ray. Even if the point is far from the camera, the rendering results are perfect. I want to know how to achieve this?

Is is possible to increase sampling for only a section of the image? i.e. if we know what we are trying to raster is far away (and more likely to be aliased), is there an efficient way to increase the sampling of just that region?
