I wonder if there are there are solutions in place to try and better model what is printed versus the screen; both with hardware (different monitor panel technology) and in software (print previewing), thus to ultimately better show the user what the printed result will look like.

I think it is probably because different color models have different color spaces. So some colors in RGB space can't be expressed using CMYK model.
