Find this video very helpful for understanding gimbal lock: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zc8b2Jo7mno (especially the camera example). Gimbal lock comes with the order of rotation axis. It locks a direct rotation (rotation with the shortest path) when the first (in this slide, z) and last (in this slide, x) rotation axis are on a plane.

Why are Euler angles so prevalent if they maintain this property? I feel as though I've encountered both gimbal lock and Euler angles a lot.
