In this case, how would we determine f(x)? Since it is the light carried by that path, wouldn't we have to trace that entire path and sum up the radiances anyways? This just seems like a representational difference to me, what makes this "open the door to intelligent global importance sampling"?

What would be meant by 'global' sampling, as opposed to 'local' sampling?
