Instead of hitting the scene with rays, can we add color filters on top of the intensity part of the image? Just add a red filter if there is red light in the scene or something. Is it because that would miss the different intensity of the filter?

How exactly is luminesce/light mimicked in generated photos? Is it typically a simple filter or do we have to manually calculate the new color that it would be if it were in bright light or in the shadows?
