In autonomous driving, computer vision is needed for the car to know its surroundings. Where is the role of computer graphics in this scenario?

It seems like the vertex / edge model of geometry would not lend itself to extremely detailed and noisy data like LIDAR and 3d photoscans - what do we use to encode the geometry in those cases?

Is there any other use of graphics, apart from just visualizing the point clouds, drawing bounding boxes?
