Are there any major pitfalls due to using a greedy algorithm to solve this problem? Does it not always produce a good result? If so, what other algorithms are used to avoid these problems?

Tying this back to our discussion on "good" meshes, are we considering this simplification method as "good" because the simplified skull "looks like" the original one? Or do the simplified skulls have some other, quantifiable properties that make them desirable?
I feel like this is kind of getting into psychology and perception, like, what do we as people perceive as "good?"
