This remind me of rendering of light, where always has a lot of gradient.

Is the graphic actually correct here? On the right graph the gradient seems to be essentially 0 on the y=x (or maybe y=.9x or something) line (or at least very much smaller than the rest of the graph), but it does seem like there is a significant amount of change in f on the y=x line on the actual graph of f.
