One way I like to think about this is like you have the same amount of peanut butter but you have to spread it out over a larger and larger piece of bread until each unit area of bread barely has any peanut butter left :(

To add to the realism, do we also have to take into account the amount of light that's scattered due to the environment? Is there a direct comparison of Irradiance falloff with scattering of light?
