It looks to me like there are more white points in the image as we increase the number of bounces. Is this just noise? Why is this happening?

@rbunny those are known as fireflies, they are from very unlikely but very bright samples, probably going through the glass into the sun. They can be very annoying when rendering! I know blender cycles renderer has some settings to cull samples with too much brightness, to reduce fireflies, although of course this technically makes your render less accurate.

Tbh I liked some of the earlier images better because the contrast was more striking. But it's true that having a greater recursion depth makes the image brighter and probably more faithful to real life.
