This is neat. I knew the earth analogy before, but still felt confused about whether some shapes should be considered manifolds. I like the checking method on this slide. Very simple and straightforward.

@eryn Yep, the definition of manifold connectivity for a polygon mesh is way easier to comprehend than the formal definition of a manifold. Often these discrete analogies are useful "scaffolding" for eventually understanding the more difficult, smooth concepts. There is a course called Discrete Differential Geometry next spring that really takes this approach.

It seems like you could still generate something like the star shape but still being manifold by using a very small cylinder in place of the single middle edge
