I primarily learned linear algebra from 21-241, which had a heavy matrix focus. I totally agree with the statement that matrices can interfere with understanding.

I think the reason why I've always struggled with matrices is because I never thought through all the properties that were underlying. I don't really think of them as vectors or linear maps, but they very much are and I think by gong through each property and reasoning through, I can have a much clear and thorough understanding of matrices.

I really like this approach of covering the geometric meaning/intuition behind linear algebra before covering matrices. It reminds me of the approach taken in the essence of linear algebra series by 3blue1brown.
