Is getting the "true area" as much of a concern when a model is built from scratch and isn't digitizing a pre-existing object either in geometry or the world?
@bcagan I think preserving the original surface area is still important. Otherwise, you are fundamentally changing the surface of the mesh, and it's not possible to ever represent a smooth surface.

The increase in surface area for this mesh reminds me of the Coastline Paradox
