I'm not sure why the directions of the incoming and outcoming light are both from the surface to the vacuum? In the lecture, the directions make me confused, since when should the incoming light be from the vacuum to the surface?

@Louise This can be a little confusing, but it is the typical convention used in graphics to denote the incident and outgoing light directions. Physically speaking the light is traveling in direction -w_i towards this surface.
