It is not clear to me what is happening here. For each point, is a random point on the light taken and the amount of irradiance from that point on the light calculated?

@anonymous Within the penumbra (the shadow region receiving a portion of light), there is a lot of noise and the pixel values seem fairly binary: either the pixel is black, or it is gray. This is because each random sample either contributes no light (the random line connecting the ground and the light source gets blocked by the occluder) or some light from the source. Only after averaging several samples can we get a good approximation of the penumbra; see next slide.
