What is modal vibration and how do we use it in graphics?

motoole2

It is used in physically-based sound rendering! We can simulate how a rigid object will vibrate over time, and these vibrations can be expressed as a superposition of different vibration modes. The shape of these modes depend on the shape and mechanical properties of the object itself.

This also applies to the mechanics of guitar strings. When plucked, the vibration of a guitar string can be expressed as a sum of multiple vibration modes, and it is these modes that produces its unique sound.
