I am confused about the meaning of "patches" here. Is it because for each Bezier surface it has exactly four control points but only two attached to the real object that makes it too simple?

@Ashley A cubic Bezier curve has four control points: two points that control the start and end points, and two points to control the tangents at these points.

In contrast, each of these Bezier patches consist of a 4 x 4 set of control points, as defined on this slide. Of these 16 control points, four control points specify the locations of the corners of this patch. Referencing back to slide 60, these control points are labelled as p_00, p_03, p_30, and p_33.
